Building confidence in healthcare access: NHS 111 workshop supports Croydon Vision community

Members of the Croydon blind and partially sighted community are feeling more confident accessing healthcare services following a successful NHS 111 education workshop delivered in partnership with Croydon Vision; a local charity dedicated to encouraging independence and personal development among blind and partially sighted people across the borough.

The workshop was conducted as part of our ongoing community engagement programme, which aims to educate patients about the range of support services available through NHS 111 and to help promote appropriate use of healthcare resources and potentially prevent unnecessary visits to busy accident and emergency departments.

Following the workshop, NHS 111 has seen an increase in the use of its Relay UK service by callers from this local community. Relay UK is a communication service that helps people communicate over the phone by converting speech into text and text into speech, to allow clear and effective communication for people with sensory impairments.

This increase suggests that blind and partially sighted patients in Croydon are becoming more confident in using NHS 111 as a first point of contact for urgent healthcare advice.

Reflecting on the workshop, members of the Croydon Vision community shared positive feedback on the experience:

“We truly enjoyed the NHS 111 workshop and appreciated the wealth of meaningful insights shared in an engaging and interactive setting. The session provided helpful learnings and new ideas while building our members’ confidence and independence. Thank you very much to Dal and the team for their support.”

The success of the session highlights the value of working closely with community organisations to ensure healthcare information reaches those who may benefit most.
